Tarry

A delay suite for Ableton Live, built as a VST3 audio effect. Version 0.1.0.

Twelve delay types, from a pristine digital echo to tape, bucket-brigade analog and lo-fi radio, tremolo and sweeping filters, swells, backwards slices, pitched ice and drifting clouds. Find one by typing what you want, shape it with the same set of knobs whatever it is, and watch every echo you've made on the display, left and right, against the song's beats. Put it on a track, or on a return track at 100% wet.

The Tarry panel: the delay type, INFINITE and TAP on the left and the measured echoes on the right across the top, then the ECHO, CHARACTER and MOTION controls, and TONE, DYNAMICS and MIX at the bottom

What it does

Types
Clean (Digital; Dual, two delays at a musical ratio in series or side by side; Pattern, sixteen rhythms of taps inside each echo), vintage (Tape with up to three heads; Bucket, a bucket-brigade analog delay that gets darker as the time grows; Lo-Fi, crushed and played through an old speaker), moving (Trem; Filter, a resonant sweep or an auto-wah; Swell) and strange (Reverse, also an octave down or up; Ice, sliced and pitched echoes; Cloud, echoes smeared into a wash).
Search
Click the type and start typing: a name, a sound or a use. "Warm", "dub", "slapback", "rhythm" and "octave" all find something. The same search box finds presets, yours included.
Shaping
TIME (synced to the tempo, or tapped in), REPEATS (past 100% they run away), TAPER for lots of repeats that still clear, and stereo, ping-pong or mono. FILTER, GRIT and SMEAR work inside the loop, so each echo is a little darker, dirtier or softer than the last; LOW CUT and HIGH CUT shape what comes out. SPEED and DEPTH wobble the echoes. DUCK pulls them down while you play, and DUCK REPEATS lets only the last note of a phrase repeat.
Character
Up to three knobs and a choice that belong to the type you've picked: the second delay's ratio, the pattern, the tape's heads, age, bias and wow, the bucket chips' loss and compander, the lo-fi sample rate, bits, vinyl and speaker, the tremolo and filter shapes, the ice interval.
Echoes display
Every time you change something, Tarry measures what the settings do to a single click and draws each echo, left above the line and right below, with the song's beats behind them: when the first echo lands and which note value that is, how many you'll hear, and when they're gone.
Infinite
INFINITE keeps what's in the delay going round for ever, untouched, while you play over it.

No added latency. Every knob, button and choice is a host parameter. 36 factory presets, two of them made for return tracks, and you can save your own.
